The utilization of solar energy as a sustainable and reliable power source is rapidly gaining popularity in Nigeria and across the world.

Aside from hydropower and wind, solar energy contributes to 5.4% of the world's renewable energy for electricity generation. However, numerous misconceptions prevail regarding its use and safety, particularly concerning the risk of fire outbreaks. Understanding the facts and implementing preventive measures is essential for ensuring the safe and efficient utilization of solar energy systems.


A viral video depicting burning rooftops in a plaza recently captured widespread attention on social media. Speculation arose, attributing the fire outbreak to overheated solar panels installed atop the plaza. Amidst these speculations, no reports by the appropriate officials have been made confirming these claims.

Many individuals believe that solar panels are highly flammable due to overheating caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight. Contrary to popular belief, incidents of solar panel fires are exceedingly rare and uncommon compared to other sources of electricity.

Solar panels consist of photovoltaic (PV) cells, which enable them to harness sunlight and convert it into electricity. According to the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), failures of PV systems are not common, and considerations regarding the fire safety of PV system installations are minimal.

Solar panels are constructed with non-combustible materials, rendering them fire-resistant. Additionally, advancements in technology have led to the integration of built-in safety mechanisms in solar panels to mitigate the risks of overheating.

CAUSES OF SOLAR PANEL FIRE
Certain factors can lead to the outbreak of fire in solar panels and they include:

  1. Poor Installation and wiring
  2. Use of sub-standard materials like wires, inverters
  3. Electrical Malfunction
  4. Overheating caused by poor spacing between the panels and roof, resulting to insufficient ventilation.
  5. External factors such as lightning, power surges etc.
  6. Extreme weather conditions
  7. Manufacturing defects.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES
In other to prevent the outbreak of solar panel fires, certain measures need to be taken in other to ensure safety and improve the life span of the solar energy systems.

  1. Regular maintenance and checks
  2. Proper installation by professionals
  3. The use of high-quality materials during installation
  4. Replacement of worn-out systems
  5. Ensure that the electrical wiring is properly connected and with no loose ends
